Lawyers Mutual Hosts Inaugural N.C. Managing Partners Summit
Lawyers Mutual hosted its inaugural N.C. Managing Partners Summit on Tuesday, May 22 at the North Carolina State Bar Building.
100+ attorneys and legal professionals from 24 cities across the state gathered for a day of learning led by keynote speaker, Jordan Furlong. Furlong is a lawyer and leading analyst of the global legal market and forecaster of its future development. During his keynote address, Furlong touched on topics such as: diversifying talent in law firms, moving from input lawyer billing to output client pricing, developing client service protocols and much more.
Throughout the day attendees gained knowledge on how to handle succession planning and firm transitions as well as growth strategies from a panel led by: Dan Atcheson (Special Counsel), Tom Lenfestey (The Law Practice Exchange, LLC), Julie Beavers (Ward and Smith, P.A.) and Lisa Angel (the Rosen Law Firm).
Director of the North Carolina State Bar’s Lawyer Assistance Program (LAP), Robynn Moraites along with LAP Clinical Director, Cathy Killian led a discussion on how to respond to a colleague in need.
The Innovations in Law panel highlighted North Carolina lawyers implementing non-traditional practices. Panelists highlighted everything from office layouts to travel hacks. Panelists included: Lisa Angel (the Rosen Law Firm), Rachel Blunk (the Forrest Firm), Anna Gray Carpenter (McIlveen Family Law Firm) and Aaron Lay (Hamilton Stephens Steele + Martin, PLLC).
The program concluded with breakout sessions for a “Managing Partner Conversation among Peers.” Managing partners discussed hot topics such as: compensation models, recruiting and retaining talent and when to hire a chief operating officer or office or business manager.
Prior to the event, attendees completed a survey regarding firm leadership. In answering the question, what are the biggest challenges affecting law firm profitability, firms cited: Lawyer productivity 63%, changing legal marketplace 66%, client pressure on law firm rates 34%, competition from national or regional law firms 31%, competition from local law firms 43% and competition from other resources such as online legal providers 37%.
“Managing Partners face many challenges and they are pulled in many directions. Today’s program was designed to provide education about the changing legal marketplace and to build a network of support for the lawyers and legal professionals building the law firms of today and the future,” said Camille Stell, Vice President of Client Services.
