What is Thought Leadership?

How would you define the phrase Thought Leadership?

Would you include qualities like credibility, sincerity and authenticity? Intelligence, expertise and experience? And which comes first – the thinking or the leading?

Those were the topics of discussion at the March 2022 meeting of the Leading Law Roundtable, a monthly gathering of lawyers and legal professionals hosted by Lawyers Mutual Consulting & Services.

Hosting the one-hour session was Alexandra Davis, a lawyer, author, writing coach and CEO of Davis Legal Media.

“It’s easy enough to generate ideas,” she says on her website. “Getting them out there and doing the work? That’s another feat entirely.”

Every day, Davis helps lawyers and legal professionals become Thought Leaders.

“We help lawyers turn their great ideas into compelling marketing assets, from thought-provoking, industry-relevant articles, to engaging nonfiction books and custom websites that are both visually beautiful and ethical,” she says. “With a combination of legal industry knowledge, marketing skills, writing prowess, and creativity, we help lawyers across the U.S. show up powerfully and impactfully across digital media.”

In an article for Attorney at Law, Davis outlines three steps to creating thought leadership content.

  • Commit to consistency
  • Specialize
  • Outsource

“It takes time and commitment to build a platform, but thought leadership marketing carries tangible, powerful ROI: every piece of content you thoughtfully craft and publish further solidifies your status as a trusted authority,” she writes. “Explosive, overnight success is rare. Rather, what matters is continuing to show up, meet your audience where they are, and refine your messaging. In time, you will build a sturdy platform that even a pandemic cannot destroy.”

“We created Leading Law to bring you together with equally passionate people ready for something new,” says Camille Stell, CEO and founder of Lawyers Mutual Consulting & Services, which hosts the monthly Leading Law Roundtables. “We designed Leading Law to include lawyers, law firm leaders, legal professionals, legal technicians, business partners within the legal ecosystem, and law school innovators who want to influence and advance the conversation and direction of the modern law practice.”

Stell says Leading Law is different from other online industry platforms in several respects.

“First, it’s ours,” she says on the Leading Law website. “As we build this community together, we have some great features for creating exclusive content, deeper conversations, richer polls, and online or in-real-life events. Second, there are more ways for you to meet people who are near you, who fall into the same categories, or who care about the same topics. We can’t get this in free groups or on a website elsewhere. Third, we bring together content and community. This means Leading Law will bring you new, fresh ideas and new practices that you can take into your daily life.”
